Good news!!! workbooks have arrived and are available for purchase at the school office. Make sure your children have both a textbook and a workbook with them everyweek.

Welcome to Arabic 4, 2009 web page

Hope all of you had a wonderful summer and the kids are full of energy and ready to tackle another school year. I hope that you are enjoying the blessings of the month of Ramadan.

This page is for both parents and kids. I'll be posting class outline, homework, tests schedule etc, so do refer to it regularly.

This year we are going to use new textbooks and workbooks: Ouhiboo El-Arabia wa Ataalamooha (Jeunesse Sans Frontieres) - Level 4. These books are written in Arabic. If you are not an Arabic speaker, and need a trnaslation, email me at  Arabic4@icbwayland.org

Class 09/06/2009

Meet and great. Kids introduced themselves in Arabic. We talked about vacation and wrote a couple words for our vocabulary. The list is given below for review:

Hadika - park
outla - vacation
saiida - happy
bahr - sea
shatee el bahr - beach

We reviewed basic ways of asking questions such as:

Ayna dahabta (dahabtee)? - Where did you go?

We read our first text from the textbook "Hal Kadayta outlaa saiida?" page 7. Please practice with your kids reading this text, we will be referring to it during upcoming classes.

Class 09/13/2009

Picture viweing and explanation in Arabic, page 7. The kids learned that a common answer to Ayna , is "fee". Example: Ayna kadayta outlataka? Kadaytoo outlatee fi el-bahr.

We read the text again and answered all questions (in Arabic)  on page 8. Vocabulary words to review:

katha - spend
saif - summer
safara - travel
bilad - country
jadida - new

Homework: Review vocabulary list and read text in page 12 "Outalatoo el-ousbou".

Class 10/04/09

Reviewed list of vocabulary words seen so far. Made sentences for each. We also read page 12 and page 13 of text book. We learned to identify meaning of words by looking at the pictures. We built new list of vocabulary words:

El-thalj - snow
El-jabal - mountain
El-kura - ball
Amtiaa - luggage
Moutaa - fun (notice the similarity with the previous word)
El-taam - Food
Rahala - To relocate
El-khaima - tent

Practice at home making sentences with the vocabulary words you learnt so far. Make index cards, cut-out pictures for the words either from magazines, print them or draw them. Write the word in Arabic on each index card.

HW: From workbook, pages 2, 3 and 4.

HW Help for non arabic speakers:

workbook page 2:

first exercise: read the sentences and write next to each if true or false. When it's false, give the correct sentence (based on text understanding done in class).

second exercise: Put an 'X' next to the outlier picture among the series of pictures (this picture has nothing to do with the others)

workbook page 3:

Describe each place using 3 sentences. Use the vocabulary on the left hand side of page 3.

workbook page 4:

first exercise: Pick the right word from the list of words in red, and put it in the gaps.

second exercise: Put an 'X' next to each correct sentence (based on text understanding done in class)

Class 10/11/09

Sorry I was sick this week and couldn't post class notes or HW. I hope parents at least reviewed with their kids vocabulary words learnt so far. In this week class, we will make index cards (teacher will provide supplies) with the words we learned and cut-n-paste pictures from magazine or newspapers to help us remember the meaning of the words. We will keep these cards on our felt board and will use them along the year. If you happen to have old magazine or newspapers, please give them to your kids Sunday.

We started the lesson by a HW correction, taking the opportunity to learn new words such as:

sawab : true
khata'a : false
yatassalakoo : climb
Al-ta'am : food
Rassa'eel : letters
Saeed : fishing
Sanara : fishing pole
Fa'ass : axe
floater : awaam
Yashwee : he grills
lahm : meat

We also introduced the subject and verb relation and how a verb changes its form based on the subject. For simplicity we sticked to past and pronouns: Ana (I), Anta (you for masculine), Anti (you for feminine), Hoowa (He), Heeya (She). For example:

Verb dahaba (to go)

Ana dahabtoo (notice that it always ends in "ttt" with damma "ooo sound")
Anta dahabta (taa with fahta)
Anta dahabtee (tww with kassra)
Hoowa dahaba (verb is unchanged)
Heeya dahabatt (ends with letter "t" with sookoon)

Please practice with your kids using other simple verbs. Avoid verbs that end in vowels such as Mashaa (to walk).

No HW this week. But keep on reading just like English School or have a parent or a friend read to you.

Class 10/18/09

The kids had a lot of fun working on their index cards and very proud as we pin'ed them onto our felt board.

HW: Page 5, page 7, page 8 (exercise 3), page 9.

Class 10/25/09

Since HW had no translation last week, I forgave those who did not bring it to class and we actually went over all exercises and did them togather. I will do my best at providing translation for HW going forward.

We introduced pronoun to point to something/someone, for example:

hathehee (this for femnine)
haaoolaee (these)

Also pronouns to designate ownership:

Kitaboohoo (hoo at the end is for "his")
Kitaboohaa (hers)
Kitaboohoom (theirs)
Kitaboohoona (theirs for feminine plural)
Kitaboohooma (theirs for dual form)

We also had a fire drill today and the kids were very cooperative. Kudos kids!

HW for this week:

- And to review concepts taught in this week class,
    - write 3 sentences using hatha, hathehee and haoolaee.
